We all know to get regular oil changes to keep the engine running smoothly. We know to turn off our lights when we park the car so that we don’t drain the battery. There are other car care items, however, that many people neglect, and it’s killing their cars! Don’t let yourself forget about these important maintenance to-do’s:
Change Your Air Filter – Your car may not have lungs, but it still needs to breathe. Think of your car’s engine as its lungs - our lungs can’t function properly if airflow is restricted. Your car’s engine is the same way. Running your engine with a filthy air filter is like trying to breathe through a straw while you run a half marathon. When your engine can’t breathe, it overheats. Wait long enough and you may not have an engine anymore, which isn’t ideal.
Change Your Brake Pads – If you are noticing a squealing noise when you apply your brakes, it’s probably time to replace your brake pads. These pads prevent your metal rotors from grinding on metal and becoming damaged. Bare brake pads are also less effective and less safe.
Change Your Tires – It’s easy to forget about your tires. You probably don’t inspect them closely on a daily basis and there is no indicator light for worn out tread like there is for low oil or low tire pressure. Many people don’t even know how to tell whether they need new tires. Fortunately, it’s pretty easy. Take a penny out of your pocket and place it head first into several tread grooves in your tire. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head everywhere that you place the penny, it’s time for new tires! If part of Lincoln’s head is always covered, then you have some tread left. It’s important to test your tires especially when you know road conditions will be poor – such as in the winter or before a heavy rain.
